You must have wallet and pocket full of coins but have you ever noticed the side pattern on it i.e. ridges. Yes, the ridges engraved in a creative pattern around the coins. The government made such coins with ridges on the sides but do not prefer the plain ones.
#4 The Historic Fact
Now comes to the fact of ridges on the coins that date back to 1792, the time when Coinage Act prevailed. At that time, coins of $10, $5 and 2.5$ were made with plain sides. This was mainly done to differentiate the coins among each other.
In relation to this, half dollar dime, quarter dollar dime and half dime coins are also manufactured plain with a face value of silver.

During the Coinage Act in 1792, big dollar coins had gold sides, whereas, small dollar coins were made up of silver in order to differentiate their face value.

Despite manufacturing gold and silver coins for better differentiation, their manufacturing was put to stop mainly because of thieves. They actually shave the gold and silver sides of the coin in order to sell at the marketplace.
Therefore, US Min finally started reading the ridges that made it impossible to shave the expensive metals from the sides of the coins.
