Amongst all our organs, eyes are the most delicate ones. We cannot even imagine how hell life turns out to be when eyes loses its power and turns dead. But as the world is progressing towards modernism and advanced technology, the researchers have found a way to restore the vision of a blind.
Recently, their studies and hard work was paid off when the implantation of a woman's eye who was blind for the past 7 years was a huge success. The Implant is called Bionic Eye Implant and the woman is now able to distinguish the colors and shapes all over again.
Initially, the surgeons from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) had inserted a wireless stimulator chip into the 30-year-old's brain.
Without having any bad effects of the procedure, she can now see color flashes and cam distinguish the shapes as well.
#2 This Is How It Works.
As per the chairperson Robert Greenberg, the mechanism behind the implantation is quite simple. The device is designed as a part of the Orion 1 programme by Second Sight. It basically utilizes the technology in order to restore the vision by bypassing the optic nerve which then stimulates the brain's visual cortex.
The machine is specially designed for the ones who cannot get their eyesight back by Argus II retinal sysytem. Moreover, Argus II aren't much in demand as it calls for some retinal cells in the patient.
Although this method, by far, is said to be quite useful as it transfers signals directly to the brain. Be it due to glaucoma, cancer, diabetic retinopathy, or trauma, the Bionic implant can efficiently restore the sight.
#1 Next On The List.
Once they recive an approval by the FDA in 2017, the next step by the company would be to merge the implant with a camera on the glasses.
“Based on these results, stimulation of the visual cortex has the potential to restore useful vision to the blind, which is important for independence and improving quality of life,†stated the UCLA neurosurgeon Nader Pouratian, the man behind the implanted simulator.
